I’m Steve Jackson, the founder of NewReg.co.uk and over the past 35 years in the number plate industry, I’ve witnessed the remarkable evolution of personalised number plates in the UK. I’ve always been passionate about helping people find that perfect unique registration that reflects their identity. Private plates have become more than just a way to identify a vehicle, they’re a form of personal expression, a statement, and sometimes even an investment.
What Are Private Number Plates?
Private number plates, or personalised registrations, are custom vehicle registration numbers that you choose to convey a unique message or identity. Unlike standard, randomly assigned number plates, private number plates feature specific combinations of letters and numbers that often represent names, initials, words, or significant dates. They transform your vehicle into a reflection of who you are.
Over my 35 years in the business, I’ve seen how celebrities have influenced the growth and popularity of personalised plates. Their embrace of unique registrations has showcased the allure of owning a private plate, making it a desirable accessory for many vehicle owners. The trend of personal number plates allows individuals to express their unique identities and interests, making their vehicles easily recognizable and giving them a distinct character. Whether it’s for personal expression, branding, or investment, the trend continues to thrive, inspired by those in the public eye.
Key Features of Private Registration Plates

- Personal Expression: They can reflect your personality, hobbies, profession, or interests.
- Investment Value: Some cherished registrations appreciate over time and can be considered an investment.
- Gift Option: They make memorable gifts for special occasions, a personalised plate is a gift that lasts a lifetime. With our extensive experience and customer satisfaction, we guide you in finding the perfect private registration, ensuring a smooth buying process and flexible payment options.

Every March and September, millions more options are added to our database, giving you an even wider selection of personalised registrations to choose from.
- DVLA Auctions and Sales: The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) regularly holds auctions and sales where you can buy unissued personalised registrations. Additionally, private auction houses often list previously issued marks being resold by private and trade sellers.
- Buy from Private Sellers or Dealers: Many companies and individuals sell personalised plates that they currently own. As a trusted dealer, we can help you navigate these options to find the perfect private registration.
- Transfer Process: Once you’ve chosen your private number plates, we can manage the assignment to your vehicle through a straightforward transfer process with the DVLA. We aim to make the experience as smooth as possible.
Eligibility Requirements
To buy a private number plate, you must meet certain eligibility requirements set by the DVLA. These rules ensure that private number plates are used correctly and safely on UK roads. Firstly, your vehicle must be registered in the UK and have a valid MOT certificate. This ensures that the vehicle is roadworthy and meets safety standards. Additionally, the vehicle must be taxed or have a valid SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) declaration, which indicates that the vehicle is either in use or officially off the road.
When purchasing private number plates, it should be noted that some must be assigned to your vehicle immediately but that others can be held on certificate for up to 10 years. Importantly, the private number plate must not make the vehicle appear newer than it is. For example, you cannot assign a plate like “AB20 ABC” to a 2010 car to make it appear as a 2020 model.
Checking these eligibility requirements before purchasing a private number plate is crucial to ensure that you can use it on your vehicle without any issues. By adhering to these guidelines, you can enjoy your new private number plate with peace of mind.

How Did the Private Number Plates Industry Start?
The personalised number plate industry in the UK began to gain significant momentum in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I remember those days vividly, New Reg was known as the ‘New Kids On The Block’ bringing new ideas and enthusiasm to a pretty formal industry. It was an exciting time of growth and innovation in our industry.
Several factors contributed to this surge:
DVLA Auctions
In 1989, the DVLA started hosting auctions for previously unissued registration numbers that had potential personal or sentimental value.
These auctions made personalised plates more accessible to the general public, igniting interest across the country.
New Reg Launches Online
In 1996, after 6-years of cramming as many printed combinations into expensive magazines and newspapers, New Reg Limited launched the very first online e-commerce website selling personalised registrations. This was a groundbreaking moment, delivering millions of registrations in searchable format, paving the way for DVLA Swansea and other traders to embrace the digital age.
Celebrity Influence
Increased media coverage of celebrities and public figures sporting personalised plates boosted public interest.
Owning a unique registration became a status symbol, and the demand for private plates soared.
Investment Potential
People began to recognise personalised plates as an investment opportunity.
Rare or highly sought-after registrations started fetching high prices in the resale market.
Marketing and Advertising:
Businesses started using personalised plates as mobile advertising tools.
This commercial use further expanded the market, showcasing the versatility of personalised registrations.
Cultural Shift:
The 1990s saw a cultural shift towards individualism and personal expression.
Personalised plates offered a new medium for people to express their identity.
Impact on the Market
- Economic Growth:
The industry’s growth contributed millions of pounds annually to the UK economy.
The DVLA has reportedly raised over £2 billion from personalised plate sales since the inception of their auction program.
Proliferation of Dealers
Numerous private dealers and brokers emerged, facilitating the buying and selling of personalised registrations.
Online marketplaces like NewReg.co.uk streamlined the process, making it easier than ever to find your registration plate.
The Landscape in the 2020s
Widespread Popularity:
Private plates are now commonplace on UK roads.
They range from affordable options to highly exclusive number plates worth hundreds of thousands, and even millions of pounds.
Continued Growth:
In the 2020’s, with the advent of social media, everything turbocharged, and the numberplate business entered the Veblen goods sector.
The industry continues to grow still, with twice-yearly new issues and auctions fuelling constant demand.
New registration formats provide ongoing opportunities for personalisation, with new ranges issued in March and September each year.
A 1 – The Most Coveted Registration In The Business
One of my favourite stories in the world of cherished registrations is that of “A 1.” Earl Russell, also known as Arthur Edward Henry Russell, is famously associated with securing the “A 1” registration, the very first number plate issued by the London County Council.
According to popular accounts, Earl Russell was keen to obtain “A 1” and sent his chauffeur to camp overnight outside the council offices before registrations opened. This dedication paid off, and “A 1” was duly assigned to his vehicle, making it the first recorded personalised number plate in the UK. It’s a tale that highlights the longstanding appeal of unique registrations.
Celebrity Influence on the Growth and Popularity of Personalised Number Plates
Over the years, New Reg has supplied countless Celebrities and notarised individuals with their ultimate number plates. In fact, the surge in popularity of personalised number plates can be attributed in part to various celebrities who embraced them as symbols of status, identity, and personal branding. Their high-profile use of customised registrations has inspired many others to follow suit. Here are some notable figures who have significantly influenced this trend:
Sir Elton John
Plate: “ELV1S”
In 1993, Sir Elton John famously purchased the “ELV 1S” number plate, reportedly paying £75,000 for it. While the plate spells “Elvis,” it drew significant media attention and highlighted the appeal of DVLA number plates as collectible items.
Theo Paphitis
Plate: “RYM 4N”
Known for his role on “Dragon’s Den” and as the former owner of stationery retailer Ryman, Theo Paphitis’s clever use of “RYM 4N” promotes his brand while showcasing the marketing potential of personalised plates. Interestingly, Theo once turned down the opportunity to buy “TP 1” from us at New Reg, underlining that the appeal of personalised plates is very much a personal preference. On a personal note, I’m rather pleased he did, as I ended up swapping TP 1, with a few other combinations, with my friend (and biggest competitor), who had acquired my ultimate number plate SJ 1. A registration that I continue to enjoy today.
Lord Sugar
Plate: “AMS 1”
Often seen on television, Lord Sugar’s “AMS 1” plate has become synonymous with the charismatic tycoon. In addition to “AMS 1,” he also owns “1 AML,” further cementing his affinity for personalised registrations. His use of such plates on luxury vehicles has enhanced their association with success.
Paul Daniels
Plate: “MAG 1C”
The late magician Paul Daniels owned the “MAG 1C” plate, cleverly spelling “MAGIC.” This plate became iconic and highlighted how personalised registrations can be both personal and entertaining.
Jimmy Tarbuck
Plate: “COM 1C”
Jimmy Tarbuck, a renowned British comedian and entertainer, is famously associated with the private plate “COM 1C,” which cleverly spells out “COMIC.” This personalised plate is a direct reflection of his profession and adds a humorous touch to his public persona.
How This Impacted Popularity
Media Exposure:
Celebrities driving cars with unique number plates attract media attention, raising public awareness and interest in personalised registrations.
Status Symbol:
High-profile individuals using personalised plates have reinforced the idea that these plates are symbols of success and exclusivity.
Personal Branding:
Celebrities leveraging personalised plates for branding purposes demonstrate how such plates can be marketing tools, inspiring businesses and entrepreneurs.
Investment Awareness:

Normalisation:

Reflecting on my journey in this industry, it’s incredible to see how personalised number plates have become an integral part of British car culture.
